Amalia Deaztlan – DWD’s 2024 Bosworth Awards Honoree

Amalia Deaztlan’s family crossed into the United States when Ms. Deaztlan was a child.  Her family settled in Thermal, California.  Dropping out of school, she began working in the fields of the Coachella Valley. She experienced firsthand the injustices of brutally long hours and backbreaking labor. This experience led Ms. Deaztlan into community organizing.  In 1971, she became one of the main plaintiffs on behalf of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and the United Farm Workers in a lawsuit addressing the use of pesticides in the fields.

In 1980, Coachella Valley leaders, including Ms. Deaztlan, founded the Coachella Valley Mexican American Chamber of Commerce.  Ms. Deaztlan served as a board member on the Migrant National Health Task Force. She is past vice chair of the Riverside County District Attorney Crime Prevention Foundation.  She serves on the Martin Luther King Commemoration Committee of the Desert.

Ms. Deaztlan was a Democratic National Committee delegate in 1996, 2000, and 2004.  The Riverside County Board of Supervisors named Ms. Deaztlan the Fourth Supervisorial District 2023 Woman of the Year.

Ms. Deaztlan co-founded the Democratic Women of the Desert in 2007. This organization educates Riverside County residents on women’s issues; encourages the political participation of women on local and national levels; raises funds for candidates who support the economic empowerment of women; and provides college scholarships.
